Drummer. Entrepreneur. Music Industry Advocate.
Tammy Hurt
Tammy Hurt's entire life has been about music - creating it, working in the industry, and helping others understand the role it plays not only in our hearts and our community but also in our economy. The daughter of a musician, Tammy learned firsthand about the art and business of music, and in the years since has built an undeniable reputation not only as a talented drummer, recording artist, and Emmy-nominated television and music producer but also as a fierce advocate for those who create the sounds we love to hear.
An entrepreneur at heart, Tammy's boutique entertainment firm, Placement Music, which she founded in 2010, has been commissioned for various projects including FOX Sports, Paramount Pictures, CBS, MTV, HBO, BET, Sony, the NFL, and NASCAR, among others. She is a recipient of Catalyst Magazine's Top 25 Entrepreneurs and Ones to Watch Award, has been a featured TEDxAtlanta speaker, and has been recognized as a Most Admired CEO by the Atlanta Business Chronicle for her significant contributions to the metro Atlanta area.
Never happier than when she is sitting behind a drum kit, Tammy released her most recent recording project, Sonic Rebel - We Made This With Our Hands, which was recorded at Big Trouble Recording Studios in Atlanta and features members of the band Grouplove.
She serves as Chair of the Recording Academy's Board of Trustees, and oversees the organization's functions and policies, including the GRAMMY Awards. Serving her second term, she is only the third female, second Atlantan, and first openly LBGTQ+ person to hold the position in the Academy's 66-year history. In this role, she also serves on the boards of GRAMMY Global Ventures, the Latin Recording Academy/Latin GRAMMY Awards, the GRAMMY Museum, and MusiCares, a non-profit that provides financial grants and a wide range of support resources to members of the industry.
Driven by her belief that the power of music can both unite communities and make them financially stronger, Tammy led the campaign that successfully passed the state of Georgia's first standalone music tax incentive, the Georgia Music Investment Act, which will strengthen the city and state's economy through music education, workforce development, and an expanded industry presence. She was commended by Governor Brian Kemp for her impact on the music industry throughout the United States. She continues her advocacy efforts today as a member of the Georgia Film, Music & Digital Entertainment Commission.

Recording Academy Elected Leaders Unite To Recreate John Prine's "Angel From Montgomery"
“John Prine was one of the most influential songwriters of his generation and we joined the world in mourning when we learned of his passing,” said Tammy Hurt, Vice-Chair of the Recording Academy. “John was a much-beloved country and folk singer/songwriter, with a very giving spirit. This project is a tribute to honor that spirit and, in turn, raise awareness for the work that MusiCares is doing to support music creators around the country affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The need is still so great and these times remain critical for music people." Read the article on Grammy.com
